LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a powerful man-made psychedelic drug that can cause intense changes in how you think, feel, and perceive the world. It’s chemically similar to the brain chemical serotonin and also related to other hallucinogens like the ones found in magic mushrooms and DMT.
LSD is derived from lysergic acid, which occurs naturally in a fungus called ergot. Scientists chemically attach two diethylamine groups to this acid to create LSD. Because part of it comes from nature and part is made in a lab, LSD is called a semisynthetic drug. [1]
Originally synthesized in 1938, its psychoactive properties were discovered in 1943. Research began to rapidly advance in the 1970s; however, legal and political pressures ended almost all scientific studies on the drug. More recently, however, studies have begun to be done on the therapeutic nature of LSD.
Some research indicates potential clinical uses for treating substance use disorders and mental health disorders. However, most of these studies weren’t done with proper testing standards and are inconclusive. More testing is needed to understand whether there is an actual correlation between addiction and/or mental health symptom improvement. Potential risks include worsening symptoms or causing relapse.

Onset and Duration
Onset: Effects typically start 30–60 minutes after taking LSD orally, though they can begin as early as 20 minutes.
Duration: The main part of the experience lasts approximately 7–12 hours, but some effects may persist for up to 20 hours or even 24 hours in some instances.
LSD is known for hallucinations, seeing things that aren’t there, or hearing sounds differently. People may experience bright colors, moving shapes, and shifts in their thought patterns. These are called “pseudo‑hallucinations” because the person knows they’re not real.
Moods can swing widely; one might feel joy, wonder, or calm, but also fear, anxiety, or confusion. On the flip side, “bad trips” involve paranoia, panic, or a sense of losing control.
LSD can also affect the body:
Heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure may rise.
Pupil dilation can occur, causing the pupils to appear very large.
Other effects include sweating, jaw clenching, dry mouth, and possibly nausea or tremors.
Feeling physically restless, having trouble sleeping, or muscle tension are also common. Though not directly addictive, LSD can be intense and mentally exhausting, especially during long trips or difficult experiences.

From chemical hazards during production to intense psychological harm like bad trips, flashbacks, and persistent visual effects (HPPD), abuse can lead to trauma and disrupted lives, especially when purity and mental health aren’t assured. Even before people take LSD, serious dangers exist during its production:
Chemical injuries: Chemical hazards in illicit labs, exposure to toxic, flammable, and corrosive substances, can cause burns, poisoning, or respiratory damage.
Toxin ingestion: Without quality control, impurities or incorrect doses are common. Users may unknowingly ingest unknown chemicals or harmful byproducts, putting their health at risk.
These risks mean that using LSD made outside certified laboratories can expose individuals to unpredictable and dangerous substances.
Even though LSD isn’t physically addictive, it poses real psychological threats:
Adverse Psychedelic Episode or “Bad Trips”
These intense experiences can include overwhelming fear, panic, paranoia, and confusion. They can be deeply traumatic and leave long-lasting emotional scars.
Flashbacks & HPPD
Some users re-experience LSD-like visuals or distortions later, sometimes long after use.
Up to 50% report occasional flashbacks, with 1–3% developing persistent hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD), causing ongoing visual disturbances like halos, trails, or visual snow.

Because street LSD can contain unknown substances or vary greatly in strength, accidental overdoses are more likely during recreational use.
Since the mid-1960s, LSD has been classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act. This means it is considered to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, making it illegal to manufacture, possess, or distribute outside of authorized government-approved research. Researchers face significant legal and regulatory hurdles in conducting studies due to this strict classification. Licenses from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are required, and substances must be obtained under strict controls. Despite its Schedule I status, interest in LSD for medical research has grown in recent years. Modern clinical studies demonstrate that controlled doses can produce positive effects on mental health.
